Children & Youth

Children and youth are an important part of our church family. We see them as precious gifts that have been entrusted to our care, but we also recognize that they can be teachers, ministers, and leaders – regardless of their age. In fact, children and youth are one of the five priority areas of focus that we discerned through our recent mission study.

As we move forward, we will be seeking to improve and expand the ways we reach out to and connect with them, serve their particular needs, and equip them as Christian disciples and ministers both within our church family and in the community as a whole. Here are some the current activities and ministry opportunities we offer children and youth.

Worship

We don’t have any rules about how children may participate in any of our worship services. However, the 11am service meets the needs of children and youth the best. During the 11am service we provide optional nursery care for infants to preschoolers. If you prefer to keep your child/children in worship with you, we offer “busy bags” to help keep younger kids occupied if they become restless. Just ask an usher for one as you come in.

The 11am service also features our “Time for Children”, when all of the kids are encouraged to participate. Even the little ones from the nursery join us for a few moments at this time. It includes a brief message in an interactive format, and ends with an invitation for one or more of the children offer a closing prayer for the group. Sometimes, a child or youth ministers to his/her peers and the congregation as a whole by serving as the giver of the message.  After the “Time for Children” , school-aged children and youth are excused to head upstairs for their own Sunday School classes if they are so inclined. But, they can stay for the rest of worship with the adults if that seems like a better fit.

The 3rd Sunday of every month is Youth & Young Adult Sunday.  This service contains more worship elements that resonate with young people and give them the opportunity to worship in a way that is meaningful and authentic for them.  Rather than leave for Sunday School after the “Time for Children”, all of the kids stay in the sanctuary for the entire worship service. Children and youth are also encouraged to engage in acts of worship ministry and leadership as  Acolytes, Ushers, and Liturgists.

Sunday School

Our Sunday School Classes for children and teens are held during the 11:00am worship service each Sunday – except for Youth and Young Adult Sunday. Classes are available for ages 4 and up. These Sunday School classes are designed to be both participatory and age-group appropriate.

 Vacation Bible School

Each June, under the fearless leadership of Brenda Brown, many members of the congregation come together to pull off our Annual Vacation Bible School. Not only is it a valuable discipleship-building program for the young people in our congregation, it’s also our largest and most significant form of outreach to the children and youth of our neighborhood.

Junior Deacons

While the office of Deacon is an ordained position, we believe that many young people possess both the gifts and desire to minister to the needs of others. The Junior Deacons program is designed to develop these gifts and equip our youth to serve in the role of Deacon.  The group is led and mentored by Deacon Ruth Bragg.

The Junior Deacons are charged with paying special attention to the needs of their peers, as well as working with the Board of Deacons to ensure those needs do not go unnoticed.  Once per quarter, the Junior Deacons are invited to participate in a portion of the regular meeting of the Board of Deacons.

Praise Dancers

One of our newest youth ministries is the College Hill Church Praise Dancers. Under the leadership of Brenda Peters and Michaele Thomas, a growing number of young people (ages 8 to adult) meet in the church sanctuary to practice fun and meaningful liturgical dance routines every Friday from 6:00 – 7:00pm.

Teen Fellowship

Approximately once a month the College Hill Teens meet for fun, Bible study and fellowship.  For more information, contact  Marcus Johnson.
